What your employees REALLY want for the Holidays!
Business owners: to holiday party or not to party? What about gifting – should it done and if so, who should get what?
In terms of holiday parties, there seems to be a real range of opinion from both business owners and employees on these. Inc. magazine surveyed people on their favorite experiences and these have ranged from low budget to high budget with everything in between.
Some ideas for the budget conscious include allowing employees to spend an afternoon having a potluck and white elephant gift exchange at the office. On the other end of the spectrum, one employee gushed about their lavish Saturday night dinner and dancing – with door prizes and hired entertainment like caricaturists and dance instructors.
For gifts, Small Business Trends has a short article describing appropriate gifts for employees, clients and service providers like consultants who are hired on a regular basis.
The gifts that are most appreciated are those that are personalized. For the client or service provider who likes wine, a nice bottle of wine is appropriate. Foodies might like a high-end cooking staple like expensive olive oils, golfers would appreciate a certificate for a round at a nice local course. Depending on the number of recipients, each gift can be personalized according to preferences, or a gift card paired with an upscale food gift like artisan jams and jellies, mixed nuts or candy could have a wide appeal for all.
As for employee gifts, a cash bonus is universally appreciated, but not feasible for many companies. Instead, look at gift cards or gift baskets that express your appreciation and show that you’ve put thought into rewarding employee work. Better yet, give the gift of time! We have many clients who hire us to provide on-site gift wrapping for their employees or even our “Un-Christmas” service to take down decorations, lights and trees after the holidays.
